My view on RAW files.
RAW files are unedited photos from a photo shoot.
Giving unedited photos opens the window for people to manipulate and edit our images without our consent. With ref to the videos below, it’s like giving someone a rough draft of your script that you’ve been working on and then having them edit and add things in there.
Photos are shot purposefully a little bit darker or lighter so that we can bring out the details. We don’t want people to see how it looks before processing. We don’t want people to think we’re bad photographers.
Back in the days, I’ve also had people get unedited photos and just as Kobeissi said in the video, they’re not happy. I completely stop this practise.
Raw files are not edited or compressed files. Raw files allow us to record the maximum amount of detail to create our photos. Raw files look dim and flat.
Paintings do not come with the artist initial planning etc. Sometimes we took a lot of shots before knowing that is what we want. A lot of those shots is not what I want to give to a client. We need to protect our work and reputation.
I love working in HSS (High Speed Sync) But there are drawbacks. In HSS I will be on the higher end of the power of the flashes that I’m using. Occasional variations of the actual flash exposure resulting in a darker exposed subject. Therefore, my work need some editing. Specially weddings where “set-
I also love using HDR (High Dynamic Range) This is when 2 shots are taken at different exposures to make a composite image. But you can also use one file, edit it into two or more different exposure files and then make one composite image of the files. Sometimes this count goes up to 30 and more copy’s of the same file. The RAW file is not nice to look at. I know I will edit the photo using HDR and with that in mind the photo was shot. Please look at the sample below “indoor shooting range”
Out of focus photos, photos with other problems like exposure, or other major issue. As good rule of thumb, for every 10 photos you take, 5 will be instant rejects, 4 will be decent, but will require a fair amount of post-
I always provide a “draft” disc first. I love your feedback. Don’t be afraid to include the bad with the good. I am willing to make changes to the final product if the standard is not jeopardized.
Calibrating your screen is an essential task. If you’ve never done so then I would be surprised if you told me you’d never had concerns about how your photos look. I use the SPYDER5PRO system. Unfortunately, most photos are viewed on non-
I WILL NOT PROVIDE ANY RAW FILES TO ANYONE.
What are RAW Files?
Let’s keep it simple. RAW files are the highest quality type of digital image a digital camera can capture. So, to my mind, any pro photographer worth his salt will ALWAYS shoot in Raw format. I always shoot in Raw format.
However, RAW files are also an unfinished image (as the name implies). You cannot print, or in fact do much anything with a Raw file, you need to convert it into a usable file format, usually JPEG.
Think of RAW files as negatives in film camera terms.
Photographers don’t deliver RAW files to clients.
A Photographer’s style is determined not only by how they actually take the photo, but also the editing on the photo, and what the photographer is known for.
